The 4 MBTI dichotomies and 16 types

MBTI (the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator) describes personality with four preference dichotomies. Each dichotomy contrasts two opposite tendencies and identifies the side you feel more comfortable with. This test estimates your preferences with three questions per dichotomy, 12 in total.

The 4 MBTI preference dichotomies
DichotomyTwo sidesMeaning
E / IExtraversion / IntroversionWhere you draw energy (people and activity vs. inner world and rest)
S / NSensing / IntuitionHow you take in information (facts and reality vs. possibilities and patterns)
T / FThinking / FeelingHow you decide (logic and principles vs. relationships and values)
J / PJudging / PerceivingLifestyle (planning and order vs. flexibility and spontaneity)

The four letters combine into 16 types such as ISTJ, ENFP and INTJ. To see every type's traits and strengths at a glance, read the All 16 MBTI Types at a Glance guide. When a dichotomy is weak (close to the middle), the result can shift with your mood on the day.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

Is this the official MBTI assessment?

No. This is a quick 12-question test that roughly estimates your preference on four dichotomies. The official MBTI® Assessment is a paid test administered by certified professionals. These results are just for fun and self-understanding.

What do the four MBTI dichotomies mean?

E/I is the direction of energy (Extraversion/Introversion), S/N is how you take in information (Sensing/Intuition), T/F is how you make decisions (Thinking/Feeling), and J/P is your lifestyle (Judging/Perceiving). The four letters combine into 16 types.

Can my MBTI result change?

Yes. Your answers can shift with your situation, mood and timing, so the result can change too. This is especially likely when a dichotomy score is close to the middle.

Are my answers saved?

No. All answers are calculated only in your browser and are never sent to or stored on a server. Refreshing the page clears your answers.
